Broadcom’s Hock Tan says capital, not chips, is becoming AI’s biggest constraint. Korea catches up with last week’s chip sell-off: Kospi −3.65%, SK hynix −4.5%, Samsung −4.4%.

CoreValue Coverage Brief - daily newsletter

The one thing

The chip supplier now says money, not silicon, is the bottleneck. Speaking on a panel in Singapore on Monday, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan said capital will be the biggest constraint as AI development continues, and that Broadcom is getting past the wafer and memory shortages (Reuters, published 03:05 ET, in reported speech). CNBC quotes him more cautiously: what “might be the biggest constraint is capital.” He said demand for compute could outrun supply through 2029, possibly into 2030, while saying he could not be sure that far out, and that Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, at the same event, pointed to high borrowing costs and doubts over whether the heaviest AI spenders will earn a return. Per Reuters, he also said Anthropic and OpenAI have shown they can generate significant revenue.

This matters because of who said it. Broadcom is the company the WSJ reported last week to be seeking more than $50bn to finance OpenAI’s custom chip, and the 10-year Treasury sits near 5.25%, just below last Wednesday’s ~5.36%, the highest since 2002. The supply chain is telling us the next limit is the balance sheets of its customers and the lenders behind them.

Macro. Friday: S&P 500 +0.59% to 7,811.54, Nasdaq +0.64% to 27,366.17, Dow +0.83% to 51,654.95; all three rose on the week (S&P +1.2%). The SOX still fell −0.41%: the bounce went to software and the megacaps, not chips. Monday: Kospi −3.65% to 6,384.24, its fourth fall in a row, down 8.85% over four sessions starting 6 October; Kosdaq −4.83%. Taiwan reopened flat (TAIEX −0.02%). Tokyo is closed (Sports Day). Brent ~$105.8 (+1.1%). US futures at ~07:00 ET (Yahoo quote data): S&P +0.07%, Nasdaq-100 −0.12%, Dow +0.07%. No major US data today; CPI is Wednesday at 08:30 ET.

Broadcom’s Hock Tan and Intel’s Lip-Bu Tan: financing, not supply, is the next limit on AI

AVGO · INTC · Singapore panel, Mon 12 Oct; Reuters 03:05 ET

At the DBS Asia Future Forward conference in Singapore, Hock Tan said capital will be the biggest constraint on Broadcom as AI development continues, and that the company is overcoming wafer and memory shortages (Reuters, reported speech). Per CNBC’s account, he spoke of the industry as a whole (“might be the biggest constraint is capital”): supply bottlenecks should ease as capacity grows, wafer shortages perhaps by 2028–29, but compute demand could exceed what the industry can supply through 2029 and possibly into 2030. Intel’s Lip-Bu Tan cited elevated borrowing costs and uncertainty over whether the largest AI investors will earn enough on their spending (CNBC). AVGO closed Friday +0.39% at $361.54; INTC −2.22% at $104.70.

The read: Reuters frames it as Broadcom’s own constraint, CNBC as the industry’s; either way, for our Broadcom study the point is that the CEO is describing the risk to his own forecast. Broadcom’s growth from here depends on customers who need outside money to buy its chips, and it is helping arrange that money (the reported >$50bn for OpenAI). A supplier that has to underwrite its customer’s financing is taking on credit risk as well as selling chips. Watch whether he says it again on the FQ4 call in December.

FT: Nvidia in early talks to buy Reflection AI, put more money in, or hire its team

NVDA · SPCX · NBIS · FT, Sat 10 Oct

The FT reported that Nvidia is in early talks about Reflection AI: a full acquisition, a bigger stake possibly paired with a chip and compute supply deal, or a licensing-and-hiring deal of the kind it used for Groq last December (reported at $20bn). A deal could come within weeks, but the talks could still fall apart; Reflection declined to comment, Nvidia did not respond, and Reuters could not verify the report. Nvidia led Reflection’s $2bn round in October 2025 and has invested about $800m in total (FT). Reflection, last valued at a reported $25bn pre-money, released its first open-weight model, Beam, last week. It trained Beam on Nvidia GB300s rented from SpaceX (up to $6.3bn, $150m a month through 2029) and has a ~$1bn capacity deal with Nebius (SiliconANGLE).

The read: For our Nvidia study, follow the money in a circle: Nvidia funds a lab, the lab rents Nvidia chips from SpaceX and Nebius, and those neoclouds are themselves raising debt to buy more Nvidia chips (SpaceX’s reported ~$40bn). Buying Reflection would bring one customer of its customers inside Nvidia. On the day Hock Tan says capital is the constraint, Nvidia is the company with the cash to finance its own demand. The question is how much of FY2027 data-centre revenue already depends on it doing that.

Seoul catches up after a long weekend: SK hynix −4.5%, Samsung −4.4%, despite Samsung’s record quarter

SKHY · 005930.KS · MU · Seoul close Mon 12 Oct, 15:30 Seoul (02:30 ET)

Korea was shut on Friday, so Monday was its first session since the OpenAI revenue report hit US chips on Thursday. SK hynix closed −4.52% at ₩1,605,000 and Samsung −4.39% at ₩250,500, four days after Samsung’s preliminary third-quarter operating profit of KRW 107.4tn. The Korea Times cites renewed AI-bubble worries after the OpenAI report and persistent foreign selling. Several outlets (Investing.com, SCMP, TipRanks) also cite Chinese memory maker CXMT, which reported progress on a chip structure Samsung and SK hynix are pursuing and plans DDR5 RDIMM server modules by end-2026. SK hynix reports on 27 October (Korea Times; one calendar says 28 October); Samsung’s call is 29 October (Korea Times).

The read: The Kospi is down 8.85% in four sessions, and a Chinese competitor is now part of the story, so this is no longer one bad day. For our SK hynix and Samsung studies, the market is pricing the cycle, not the quarter: record profits did not hold the shares. Coinpaper reports analysts trimming forecasts as memory price increases slow. Our Micron numbers (FQ1 guide $61.5bn) assume prices keep rising. The 27 October SK hynix call is the first test of whether pricing still holds into 2027.

Rest of the group, Friday. The SOX fell 0.41% while the Nasdaq rose: Arm −3.27%, ON −2.37%, Cerebras −2.23%, AMD −2.03%, Sandisk −1.72%; EDA rose (Synopsys +2.46%, Cadence +1.15%). Monday in Asia: TSMC NT$2,540 (−0.39%) and MediaTek NT$4,625 (−1.39%) on Taiwan’s first session since Thursday; Infineon −1.2% in Frankfurt.

Networking & optical

No company news; optical rebounded from Thursday’s sell-off. Ciena +5.60%, Lumentum +5.22%, Coherent +3.40%, Cisco +3.05%, Arista +2.73%, Credo +2.21%; Astera Labs −1.39%, its third straight fall.

Hyperscalers & neoclouds

No company news. Oracle recovered part of Thursday’s fall, +4.21% to $141.40, as Bloomberg’s report of a $70bn year-end OpenAI target eased worries. DigitalOcean +8.81% (no catalyst found; MarketBeat notes thin volume), Cloudflare +5.57%, Alibaba +5.36%, Amazon +3.29%, Microsoft +2.38%. CoreWeave managed only +0.61% to $82.08 after Thursday’s 7.8% fall; IREN −1.46%. SoftBank has not traded since Friday (Tokyo holiday).

Power & data-centre infrastructure

No company news; the power trade bounced. Constellation +4.56%, Vistra +3.42%, Bloom +2.82%, nVent +1.97%, Digital Realty +1.53%, Equinix +1.47%; GE Vernova +0.54% to $1,004.73.

SaaS & enterprise software

No company news; the software rotation continued. Zscaler +7.80% (follow-through from its 6 October investor day, where it reaffirmed FY27 revenue of $3.91–3.94bn; Stifel target $235), Snowflake +7.42%, Datadog +7.11%, Palantir +5.17% to $209.05, Palo Alto +5.09%, CrowdStrike +4.57%, MongoDB +3.93%. Per a JPMorgan note cited on Friday, software (IGV) is up 21% since the end of June against 4% for the S&P 500. HubSpot −1.53% gave back part of Thursday’s gain.

Ads, adtech, consumer platforms

No material company news. Shopify +3.82%, PDD +3.95%, DoorDash +2.50%; Netflix −1.77% ahead of its 20 October print, Trade Desk −2.11%.

Apple confirms Tuesday’s “Welcome home” event, 09:00 ET in New York

AAPL · Invite 8 Oct; event Tue 13 Oct, 09:00 ET

Apple has confirmed an “Experience” in Tribeca, New York, on Tuesday 13 October at 09:00 ET, tagged “Welcome home,” via Greg Joswiak on X and an email to media (MacStories). Apple has not said what it will show. Reports expect smart-home hardware (a new Apple TV, a home hub and a second-generation HomePod mini). Our 9 October brief listed the date as unconfirmed. AAPL closed Friday −1.11% at $336.64.

The read: For our Apple study, a home hub is Apple’s most direct test of whether its AI can carry a new device category rather than sell more iPhones. Dan Ives’s “toll collector on the consumer AI highway” argument (Thursday note, per Yahoo) depends on that. Watch for named Siri capabilities and any partner-model credits, not the hardware.

Also: HPE +3.46%, Dell +2.00%; Super Micro −2.13%.

Space & mobility

SpaceX buys nationwide 800 MHz spectrum for Starlink Mobile; Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile have their worst days in decades

SPCX · TSLA · Announced Thu 8 Oct after the close; Fri 9 Oct close

SpaceX agreed to buy a nationwide portfolio of 800 MHz licences, up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum, from Grain Management. SpaceX said it fills a technical gap in its plan to launch Starlink Mobile as a US carrier. The deal needs FCC approval, and no launch date for services on the spectrum has been given (FX Leaders). Terms were not disclosed; the WSJ reported $8bn in cash, which we found only in secondary relays. It follows SpaceX’s earlier EchoStar spectrum deals of about $17bn and $2.6bn. Telecom stocks fell on Friday (not covered): Verizon −8.75%, AT&T −9.81%, T-Mobile −13.27%, their worst days since 2002, 2000 and 2013 (CNBC via search summaries). SPCX closed +1.25% at $162.57, 8% above its $150 IPO price; Evercore ISI kept Outperform with a $230 target (Yahoo live blog). Tesla +2.05%.

The read: For our SpaceX study, the market just valued the threat at the incumbents’ expense rather than adding it to SpaceX’s price. The three carriers lost far more value than SpaceX gained. Two points for the model: an $8bn cash outlay on top of a ~$40bn chip financing makes SpaceX the most capital-hungry name in coverage after the hyperscalers, and a direct-to-phone carrier is a new revenue line that the post-IPO numbers do not yet show. The spectrum needs FCC sign-off; Chair Carr sounded welcoming.

Also: Rocket Lab −0.28%; no company news.

Private labs

Nothing new since Thursday from OpenAI or Anthropic (Anthropic’s newsroom has no post after 8 October). Hock Tan’s remark (per Reuters) that both labs have shown they can generate significant revenue is a supplier’s view, not a disclosure. Anthropic’s pre-IPO investor day is reported for Wednesday 14 October (Bloomberg).

Story worth owning

Vendor financing: how much of 2027’s AI demand is paid for by the companies selling the chips?

Hock Tan’s line, that capital will be the biggest constraint, comes from a supplier that is also arranging financing for its largest custom-chip customer. In two weeks of headlines, the sellers have moved onto the lending side. Broadcom is reported to be seeking more than $50bn for OpenAI’s chip. Nvidia has about $800m in Reflection AI, which rents Nvidia chips from SpaceX and Nebius, and may now buy it. Oracle is negotiating an off-balance-sheet vehicle to lease chips. SpaceX is raising ~$40bn of debt to buy Nvidia hardware.

The testable claim: a growing share of 2027 AI accelerator demand is financed, directly or indirectly, by the companies that make the chips. The work is a ledger by supplier: equity stakes in customers, warrants granted to customers (AMD’s to OpenAI, Marvell’s Google warrant, Cerebras’s contra-revenue warrants), supplier-arranged debt, and leaseback vehicles, set against each supplier’s forecast data-centre revenue. Coverage treats each deal as a separate headline; we have not seen anyone independent add them up against the revenue they support. It draws on our Nvidia, Broadcom, AMD, Cerebras and Oracle studies, which already hold most of the inputs.

Figures are as reported by the sources listed and have not been independently verified against filings. Fact-check. A separate agent re-checked eight claim groups against Reuters via Yahoo, Benzinga’s CNBC summary, SiliconANGLE, the Korea Times, Techmeme’s CNBC relay, MacStories, FRED/Yahoo index data, SIFMA, BLS, TSMC IR and Zscaler’s release. Confirmed: the Singapore remarks and Reuters timestamp, the Reflection AI details, the Korean closes and Samsung figures, the SpaceX spectrum terms, telecom closes and SPCX close, Apple’s event, Friday’s S&P/Nasdaq/SOX moves, the Columbus Day bond closure, the CPI/ASML/TSMC dates, the 06:00 ET / 3h 30m time math and Zscaler’s guidance. Applied fixes: the “capital will be the biggest constraint” wording is Reuters’ reported speech, so the headline no longer quotes it and CNBC’s softer direct quote is added; the Anthropic/OpenAI remark is now attributed to Reuters, not quoted; the CXMT line was wrong to say single-source and now cites three outlets and the DDR5 RDIMM product; the Kospi’s 8.85% is over four sessions starting 6 Oct; the 10-year is below Wednesday’s ~5.36% high; the 2029–30 demand view is softened; SK hynix’s date and T-Mobile’s worst-day year are flagged as disputed. Not independently confirmed: the WSJ’s $8bn spectrum price (relays only), the EchoStar deal values, Tokyo’s holiday (calendar rule), the Dow’s exact decimal, and Reuters’ “could not verify” line on the FT report. The futures time (~07:00 ET) is when prices were pulled, after the 06:00 ET edition time.
