SpaceX wants to borrow $40bn to buy Nvidia chips; TSMC’s third quarter runs above guide on Bloomberg’s count; oil jumps 5% and futures fall.

CoreValue Coverage Brief - daily newsletter

The one thing

The build-out is now being financed against the chips themselves. Reuters, confirming an earlier Financial Times report, says SpaceX is seeking about $40bn to buy Nvidia AI chips: roughly $10bn of bank loans and $30bn of investment-grade debt, with Apollo expected to lead and place the debt and PIMCO in talks to lend. Talks are preliminary, and SpaceX, Nvidia and Apollo have not confirmed it. SpaceX closed −2.51% at $167.60; Nvidia −0.74%. This is the largest GPU-purchase financing we have seen for a single buyer, four months after a record $86bn IPO, and it is debt rather than equity. See the Story worth owning.

The supply side confirmed overnight. TSMC’s September revenue was NT$511.86bn, +54.6% y/y and −0.6% m/m (TSMC 6-K). Bloomberg puts the third quarter at about NT$1.49tn ($46.7bn) against a NT$1.46tn consensus, above the top of TSMC’s $44.6–45.8bn guide. Samsung’s preliminary third-quarter operating profit was a record KRW 107.4tn, +782.5% y/y, slightly ahead of consensus, on revenue of KRW 195tn that missed FactSet’s ~KRW 206.8tn. Samsung still fell −2.42% and the Kospi −2.62%.

Macro. Wednesday: S&P 500 −0.22% to 7,801.77, Nasdaq −0.22% to 27,538.69, Dow −0.66%, SOX −1.15%, after the September FOMC minutes and higher yields; the 10-year closed ~5.28%. Overnight, attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz pushed Brent to ~$105.4 (+5.2%) and WTI to ~$92.7 (+5.0%). Futures at ~07:20 ET (Yahoo quote data): S&P −0.56%, Nasdaq-100 −0.82%, Dow −0.99%. Jobless claims at 08:30 ET.

TSMC September sales NT$511.86bn, +54.6% y/y; third quarter ~NT$1.49tn, above the top of guidance

TSM · Thu 8 Oct, 01:30 ET (13:30 Taipei)

From TSMC’s release, filed as a 6-K: September consolidated revenue NT$511,857m, down 0.6% from August (NT$514,806m) and up 54.6% from September 2025 (NT$330,980m). January–September revenue was NT$3,898,727m, +41.1%. Bloomberg calculates the third quarter at about NT$1.49tn, or $46.7bn, against an analyst average of NT$1.46tn; TSMC guided $44.6–45.8bn. CNBC converts September to $16.03bn. Taipei-listed shares (2330.TW) fell −1.35% to NT$2,550 in a weak Asian session; the ADR closed Wednesday −2.09% at $472.20.

The read: The beat is about 2–5% over the guided range in dollars, and part of it may be currency: TSMC guides in US dollars on an assumed exchange rate, and Bloomberg’s conversion uses its own. For our TSMC study, September slipped only 0.6% from a 53.3% y/y August, so it reads as a flat month, not a turn. The questions for 15 October are third-quarter gross margin against the 65–67% guide, whether the 2026 capex range of $60–64bn moves, and any comment on Terafab.

Micron’s Taoyuan union wins a strike mandate; the stock still closes +4.1% as Samsung posts KRW 107.4tn

MU · TSM · Vote announced Wed 7 Oct (Reuters); Samsung filing Thu 8 Oct, Seoul

The union at Micron’s Taoyuan operations said 1,994 members, 99% of ballots cast, voted to authorise a strike over the bonus scheme (Reuters via Investing.com and US News). No date is set; the union is asking members to take 19 October off for a rally in Taipei, which it says is not a strike. The Taoyuan and Taichung unions together represent more than 80% of Micron’s ~15,000 Taiwan staff; they want a permanent profit-sharing system, and Micron gave Taiwan employees a T$1m cash bonus in September. Micron said it “will continue to work through the established dialogue and mediation processes” and will hold another mediation session with the Taichung union later this month. MU traded down more than 2% premarket, then closed +4.06% at $1,088.00 (Yahoo; TradingKey has +3.37%). Overnight, Samsung’s preliminary third quarter showed operating profit of KRW 107.4tn (+20% q/q, +782.5% y/y; LSEG SmartEstimate ~KRW 106tn) and revenue of KRW 195tn (+126.6% y/y), a 55.1% operating margin. Samsung fell −2.42%, SK hynix −2.44%.

The read: Reuters calls Taiwan a crucial production centre for Micron’s DRAM and HBM, so a stoppage there would be a supply event, not a labour footnote. The ask matters too: in September the unions pointed to Samsung’s chip unit (10.5% of operating profit to bonuses) and SK hynix (10%), against about 2.2% at Micron (The Star, 1 Sep). For our Micron study, at an 87% gross margin a profit-sharing formula is a real opex line. Samsung beating on profit while missing FactSet’s revenue estimate is consistent with pricing doing more of the work than volume, though one estimate is thin evidence; the divisional split later this month will show it.

Chips mostly lower Wednesday. Texas Instruments −2.78%, Arm −2.71%, Qualcomm −2.16%, Applied −1.81%, ASML −1.59%, Lam −1.31%, Marvell −0.81% after Tuesday’s investor-day rally, AMD −0.55%; Broadcom +0.19%, Intel +0.55%. We found no company news behind these moves.

Microsoft launches the Surface Laptop Ultra on Nvidia’s RTX Spark from $2,599; ships 16 October

MSFT · NVDA · AAPL · Event Wed 7 Oct, 13:00 ET (10:00 PT)

The 15-inch Surface Laptop Ultra runs Nvidia’s RTX Spark: the base model has an 18-core CPU, a 5,120-core Blackwell GPU and 24GB of unified memory for $2,599; the top configuration has up to 128GB of LPDDR5X unified memory (Tom’s Guide, TechSpot, Notebookcheck). Preorders opened on the day and shipping starts 16 October. Microsoft also took preorders for an RTX Spark Dev Box from about $6,000. Reports differ on the top-end price, at about $5,900 or about $6,000. MSFT closed +0.09%; Apple +0.91%.

The read: As expected, no volumes or chip pricing were given. At $2,599 and up, this is a premium, low-volume product aimed at the MacBook Pro, so it changes nothing in the Nvidia or Microsoft models. What matters for our Intel and AMD studies is whether other PC makers follow Microsoft onto Nvidia’s Arm platform in volume; TechSpot lists HP’s OmniBook Ultra 16 on RTX Spark at $3,200.

Also in the cloud group. CoreWeave −3.57% to $88.45, GE Vernova −3.12% to $997.09 (back below $1,000), Cloudflare −3.39%, Vertiv −2.63%, Oracle −0.84%. Amazon +1.42%, Alphabet +0.81%. No company news found.

SpaceX seeks ~$40bn of debt to buy Nvidia chips: ~$10bn bank loans, ~$30bn investment grade, Apollo to lead

SPCX · NVDA · CRWV · Reuters, Wed 7 Oct, 11:24 ET (FT reported first)

Two sources told Reuters SpaceX is seeking about $40bn to buy Nvidia AI chips. One source gave the split as ~$10bn of bank loans and ~$30bn of investment-grade debt, confirming the FT; SpaceX is negotiating with PIMCO, and Apollo is expected to lead and place the debt widely. No chip model, quantity or price was reported. Talks are ongoing; SpaceX and Nvidia did not comment, and Apollo and PIMCO declined. Musk has said xAI’s Colossus 2 could more than double its Nvidia chip count by December, and that SpaceX will use only Nvidia hardware in its data centres. Some coverage says the debt would be secured on the GPUs and that closing is expected in 2027; Reuters does not say either. SPCX closed −2.51% at $167.60 ahead of tomorrow’s lock-up release.

The read: For our SpaceX study, the existing contract base matters here: Google pays $920m a month for compute from October 2026 to June 2029, and either party may terminate on 90 days’ notice after 31 December. That revenue is what lenders will be underwriting, and it is cancellable on three months’ notice. We have seen no report on whether SpaceX met the 30 September GPU-delivery deadline in that contract. For Nvidia, this is ~$40bn of demand paid for with borrowed money, from one customer, on top of the financing platforms Nvidia set up in August with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR. For CoreWeave, a GPU buyer funding itself in investment-grade debt is the comparison its SOFR + 5.50% delayed-draw loans will be measured against.

SaaS, ads, consumer and hardware: no company news. Software fell with no news: CrowdStrike −4.81%, Palo Alto −3.42%, Datadog −2.48%, Adobe −2.25%, Workday −1.23%. Meta −2.38%; Zeta +2.40%, Netflix +1.47%. Walmart +0.90%, Shopify +0.97%; Dell +0.86%, Cisco −0.47%. Apple’s reported 13 October event is still unconfirmed by Apple.

Story worth owning

Can a GPU carry an investment-grade rating? Pricing the collateral behind the chip loans

If the reported terms hold, SpaceX would raise about $30bn of its ~$40bn Nvidia chip purchase in investment-grade debt. Until now the GPU-backed end of the market has looked like CoreWeave’s: delayed-draw term loans at SOFR + 5.50%, secured on the hardware and on contracted customer revenue. The gap between those two costs of capital is the gap between an asset lenders trust and one they price as speculative. The collateral is the same kind of chip; what differs is the borrower and the contracts behind it.

The testable claim: the useful economic life lenders implicitly assume for a GPU, read from loan tenor and amortisation, is longer than the depreciation lives buyers report, or than the contract terms that pay for the chips. SpaceX’s anchor contract, Google’s $920m a month, runs to June 2029 but either side can cancel on 90 days’ notice after 31 December. The work is to set out, for CoreWeave, Oracle, SpaceX and the Meta and Broadcom private-credit structures, the debt tenor, the depreciation life of the chips and the remaining term of the customer contracts, side by side. The question is whether the debt outlasts the revenue that services it. Coverage so far has reported the $40bn headline; we have not seen anyone independent compare tenor, chip life and contract term across borrowers.

Fact-check. A separate agent re-checked eight claim groups against the TSMC 6-K and IR calendar, Reuters, TradingKey, Xinhua, Notebookcheck, TechSpot, CoreWeave’s SEC exhibit, the Federal Reserve calendar and Yahoo chart data. Confirmed: every TSMC monthly and year-to-date figure, the Samsung preliminary figures and Asian closes, the Micron vote details and close, the SpaceX financing terms and close, the Surface pricing and specs, US index closes, the oil move, and the 06:00 ET / 3h 30m time math. Applied fixes: Micron’s quoted statement corrected to Reuters’ wording; the Samsung/SK hynix bonus benchmark now sourced to September coverage; HP’s RTX Spark price corrected to $3,200; the Google–SpaceX termination right is mutual; Nvidia’s August financing partners listed in full; the “largest financing” claim narrowed to GPU purchases; the Samsung pricing inference hedged; the headline now credits the TSMC beat to Bloomberg’s calculation. Not independently confirmed: Bloomberg’s NT$1.49tn quarter and NT$1.46tn consensus (paywalled), and the SpaceX lock-up size (secondary sources only).
