The one thing
Marvell’s investor day is the only scheduled company event in our coverage today, and expectations are specific. The livestream starts at 09:00 ET in New York, half an hour before the open. The current framework has custom XPU revenue at roughly $10bn in fiscal 2029, and custom silicon running at ~$1.5bn a year now. Analysts want three things: a higher fiscal 2029 number, operating-margin targets as custom work scales, and bigger data-centre market and share assumptions to 2030. RBC expects the fiscal 2029 AI revenue outlook to go up by at least $2bn (Investing.com). After a small beat in August the stock fell 10.3% the next day (28 August), so a merely steady update could disappoint. MRVL closed Monday at $271.25 (−0.38%).
The financing thread. Bloomberg reports (latest on 5 October) that OpenAI is raising $30bn at a $1.4tn pre-money valuation. It set the price itself and there is no lead investor. A UAE group including MGX is discussing up to $10bn, alongside BlackRock, Thrive and Andreessen Horowitz. The last round, in March, was $122bn at $852bn. For Oracle (RPO $664bn), Microsoft and CoreWeave, this is new equity for their largest counterparty. A round with no lead investor shows that OpenAI can name its price. It does not show how much demand there is at that price.
Macro. Monday: Nasdaq +1.05% to a record close of 27,477.31, S&P 500 +0.66% to 7,773.95, SOX +0.27%. Nvidia closed at $238.90 (+2.12%), its first record close since May, above the $235.74 of 14 May. The 10-year closed at 5.31%, the highest close in 24 years (Yahoo Finance). This morning it is at 5.32%, and Japan’s 10-year is above 3.0% (it first crossed in September). ISM services eased to 54.9 from 55.4, but prices paid rose to 74. Futures at ~06:00 ET: S&P +0.22%, Nasdaq-100 +0.29%, Dow +0.48%. Brent is about $98, down ~2% (Yahoo, ~06:50 ET). The August trade balance is due at 08:30 ET.
Sector pulse: covered names with material news
Nine of fifty names had news. Semis: Marvell (investor day), Nvidia (record close), Qualcomm (Huawei licence), Intel and TSMC (Terafab follow-through). Cloud: Alphabet (Constellation nuclear deal reported). Consumer: Shopify (Piper Sandler on agentic commerce). Hardware: Apple (13 October event reported). Space: SpaceX (Morgan Stanley). The OpenAI round affects Oracle, Microsoft and CoreWeave without being news about any of them, so they are not counted.

Marvell investor day: the market wants more than the ~$10bn fiscal 2029 custom-XPU framework
CEO Matt Murphy and the leadership team present in New York. The webcast is on investor.marvell.com and a replay will follow. The previews agree on three things to watch: (1) whether the ~$10bn fiscal 2029 custom-XPU framework goes up (RBC: AI outlook up by at least $2bn); (2) a first operating-margin target for custom silicon, which earns lower margins than merchant parts; (3) data-centre market size and share assumptions to 2030. Management has said fiscal 2029 has “a lot of upside bias”. Previews also describe the Google opportunity as potentially worth $120bn through 2033; that is a preview figure, not a company target. The fiscal Q2 beat was small ($2.74bn revenue vs $2.71bn expected) and the stock fell 10.3% on 28 August, the day after. Since then, Citi’s upgrade and Piper Sandler’s initiation have helped it recover. It closed Monday at $271.25.
The read: For our Marvell study, the number to model is margin, not revenue. If custom XPUs grow to well above $10bn on lower margins than electro-optics and switching, revenue can beat while EPS disappoints, which is how the August print played out. Set any new target against Broadcom’s ~$16.7bn of AI semis in one quarter: Marvell’s annual target is still smaller than Broadcom’s quarterly run-rate. Update the study only from the slides, not the previews.
Nvidia closes at a record $238.90; Foxconn’s record September confirms rack shipments
NVDA +2.12% to $238.90. That is its first record close since May, above the $235.74 of 14 May. Yahoo puts its market value close to $6tn, with the $150bn buyback increase still in the background. The supporting data point came from Taipei. Foxconn (Hon Hai) reported third-quarter revenue of NT$3.03tn, +47% y/y, against an LSEG SmartEstimate of NT$2.83tn. September alone was NT$1.16tn, +38%, its first month above NT$1tn. Cloud and networking (AI racks) led, and consumer electronics including iPhone also grew strongly. Foxconn expects AI to keep growing in the fourth quarter. Its shares rose 1.2%; full results are due 12 November. Dell fell −1.82% to $552.29 on no news.
The read: Foxconn is the largest AI-rack assembler, so its monthly sales are the earliest hard evidence for Nvidia’s fiscal Q3 (guide $108.0bn ±2%), weeks before TSMC’s quarter or Nvidia’s print. A 47% quarter with a record September fits the guide being met or beaten. For Dell, it is a reminder that Dell competes with its own supplier base on AI-server margins.
Terafab, day two: Intel ends −2.6% after opening −4%; TSM ADR +2.75% to $485.80
Intel recovered part of its pre-market loss and closed −2.63% at $116.19. The TSM ADR closed at $485.80 (+2.75%) after an intraday record. In Taipei, 2330.TW added +0.39% to NT$2,585 (TAIEX +0.22% to 49,822.55). Neither TSMC nor Intel has commented; Musk’s “just discussions” on X is still the only confirmation. TSMC reports September sales on Thursday at 01:30 ET (13:30 Taipei).
The read: The market priced this as a partial loss for Intel, not a lost customer. Without a filing or statement, nothing changes in our Intel or TSMC studies yet. Thursday’s September sales complete the third quarter against the $44.6–45.8bn guide. The 15 October call is where TSMC is likely to be asked about Terafab.
Qualcomm signs its first 5G licence with Huawei and will buy some Huawei US patents; terms undisclosed, stock −2.2%
Qualcomm and Huawei signed a multi-year patent cross-licence covering 5G, computing, AI and networking. It is their first agreement to include 5G. Qualcomm will also buy certain Huawei US patents, subject to regulatory approval. Neither side disclosed financial terms. TrendForce reports that Qualcomm becomes the net payer to Huawei for the first time; the companies have not said so. Qualcomm’s EVP John Han said the deal “reaffirms industry recognition” of its 5G licensing programme. For context, QTL revenue was $1.28bn last reported quarter, the lowest in eight quarters. QCOM closed −2.21% at $180.79. Some reports call it sell-the-news after September’s run, which included the Snapdragon Summit, the Apple licence renewal and AWS.
The read: For our Qualcomm study, the open question is who pays whom. If TrendForce is right that Qualcomm is the net payer, the deal is a cost to protect the 5G programme, not new QTL revenue, which may explain why the stock fell on it. Do not add QTL revenue for it until the fiscal Q4 print on the 10-K timetable shows it.
Rest of semis: mixed, no company news. Broadcom +2.08% to $362.51; Arm −1.49%; Micron −1.02% to $1,063.96. Korea reopened after the holiday with memory lower as bond yields rose: SK hynix −3.69%, Samsung −1.45%, Kospi −0.89% (all vs Friday). Samsung’s third-quarter preliminary results are due Thursday.

Google nears a $1bn-plus nuclear deal with Constellation, days after Amazon’s 20-year Calvert Cliffs contract
Bloomberg reports Alphabet is close to a multi-year agreement to buy nuclear power from Constellation Energy for $1bn or more. It could be announced this week; the plant and the megawatts were not disclosed. Amazon’s deal last week was a 20-year, 690 MW contract that supports a 190 MW uprate at Calvert Cliffs (2030–32) and ~$3bn of investment (Constellation release). On Friday AWS also pledged more than $1bn over five years to communities that host its data centres. Matt Garman said more than 100 local data-centre moratoriums are under consideration.
The read: Long-term power contracts are becoming part of the hyperscalers’ build-out cost, but they do not appear in capex guidance; they sit in purchase-obligation notes. Our Constellation Energy study now has two hyperscaler buyers in a week, and our GE Vernova study gets support for its gas-plus-nuclear framing. For Alphabet (2026 capex $195–205bn, Q2 FCF −$5.9bn), the question is how much fixed power cost it is taking on at a time when a 5.3% ten-year makes long fixed contracts more expensive to carry. See the Story worth owning.
Also in the cloud group. OpenAI’s $30bn round (above) touches Oracle, Microsoft and CoreWeave. Microsoft +1.48% to $525.18 (Windows/Surface event tomorrow). CoreWeave −2.49% to $87.39 despite Truist reiterating Buy ($165). Truist pointed to a cumulative ~37.5% price increase since July and prepayments on 70% of Q2 deals. Cloudflare +2.99% on no news found. Oracle flat.
SaaS & enterprise software
Quiet. HubSpot +2.83%, Workday +1.51%, ServiceNow +1.27%; Salesforce −2.09% to $229.79. No company news found.
Consumer platforms & commerce
Shopify +5.8% as Piper Sandler says agentic shopping is driving platform migrations
Piper Sandler reiterated Overweight and a $180 target after calls with a Shopify agency owner and a Partner Network member. Both said demand to migrate onto Shopify has risen materially as agentic tools spread. Piper says agentic transactions are being adopted about twice as fast as LLMs and carry about twice the average order value. It models 32% revenue growth by 2027, against 26% consensus. SHOP closed +5.76% at $160.11, the best move in our coverage after SpaceX.
The read: The evidence is two channel calls, not company data. For our Shopify study, the testable claim is in the Q3 print: whether merchant additions and GMV growth pick up at the same time as the 28 September opening of checkout to AI agents. Until then, this is sentiment.
Hardware & devices
Apple: Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports a special event on Tuesday 13 October for a smart-home hub, a new HomePod mini and Apple TV, all built around Siri AI. A second window in late October could bring Macs. Apple has not confirmed it. AAPL −0.24%. Dell −1.82%, Cisco +0.55%, no news.
Space & mobility
SpaceX +7.6% to $171.09, its highest since June, as Morgan Stanley calls it “unusually cheap”
Adam Jonas reiterated Overweight and a $300 target. On his numbers SpaceX trades at ~30x 2028 EV/EBIT, against ~16x for other mega-cap AI enablers, but at 0.3x EV/EBIT-to-growth, about 40% below the peer median. He named Starship Flight 15 (late October or early November) as the key catalyst, and said a successful ship catch could be “the biggest positive catalyst since the IPO”. SPCX closed +7.63%, its highest since June (CNBC); intraday headlines said 4–5%. Tesla +2.20% to $378.73. The first lock-up tranche is this Friday, 9 October.
The read: This is a valuation call, not news. A 12% gain over two sessions into Friday’s lock-up release means insiders can sell at a higher price. For our SpaceX study, the fundamental test is still the Q3 print: whether Google’s $920m-a-month compute contract started at full rate in October.
Ads & adtech: quiet. Meta +1.90% to $741.90; the rest moved less than 1%.

- SpaceX’s Monday move. CNBC/AOL headlines say ~4–5% intraday; BigGo has “nearly 8%”; Yahoo chart data has the close at +7.63%. We use the close.
- Intel’s Monday move. Yahoo’s live blog says “down ~2%”, Investing.com’s headline says 4% (pre-market); the close was −2.63% (Yahoo chart data). A pre-market list this morning still shows INTC −3.9%, which appears to be Monday’s stale pre-market figure; we do not use it.
- Marvell’s Monday close. Investing.com’s preview has $268.33 (−1.45%), apparently an intraday price; Yahoo chart data has the close at $271.25 (−0.38%). We use the close.
- Qualcomm. GuruFocus/Yahoo has −1.34% to $182.40 (intraday); the close was −2.21% at $180.79. One aggregator also attributes the fall to stalled Samsung 2nm talks and an “OpenAI training pause”; we could not source either and leave both out.
- SK hynix. Trading Economics has −3.69% to KRW 1.77m; another feed has −3.53% to KRW 1,776,000. Yahoo chart data agrees with −3.69% (KRW 1,773,000).
- Oil. Tickmill’s outlook has Brent +0.6% to $100.90; Yahoo futures at ~06:50 ET have Brent at $98.27 (−2.0%, Monday close $100.32) and November WTI −2.1% to $87.53. Tickmill’s figure looks stale; we use Yahoo.
- OpenAI round timing. Bloomberg first reported the $30bn at $1.4tn on 30 September; the 5 October story added the investor names (MGX/UAE group, BlackRock, Thrive, a16z).
- Foxconn’s September. One search result quoted NT$837bn, +14% for September; that is the 2025 figure. The 2026 figure from Reuters/The Star is NT$1.16tn, +38%.

Story worth owning
The power bill that capex guidance leaves out
The hyperscalers’ capex guidance in the chart above adds up to well over $700bn for 2026, and none of it includes power. In ten days Amazon signed a 20-year, 690 MW contract that supports a uprate at Calvert Cliffs, and pledged more than $1bn to host communities. Google is reported to be close to a $1bn-plus Constellation deal. The big buyers, including Oracle and xAI, have also signed a White House “Ratepayer Protection Pledge” to pay for their own generation and grid upgrades. These are long-dated, fixed commitments signed while the 10-year is at 5.3%. They sit in purchase-obligation and commitment notes, not in capex guidance or in debt.
The testable claim: for at least one hyperscaler, the off-balance-sheet power commitments disclosed in the next 10-K will have grown faster than capex. Our Amazon and Alphabet studies have the capex and FCF series. Our Constellation Energy and GE Vernova studies cover the other side of these contracts. Our Oracle and CoreWeave studies show the levered version, where third-party-funded sites already sit outside capex. The work is to take the purchase-obligation tables from each 10-K, separate power from compute and leases, and set the trend against capex. Financing coverage so far has followed bonds, private credit and Broadcom-style tranches. We have not seen anyone independent add up the power contracts.

Fact-check. A separate agent re-checked twelve claim groups against Yahoo chart data, ISM, TSMC IR, Constellation, GeekWire, Investing.com, TechSpot, The Star/Reuters, Bloomberg and MacRumors. Confirmed: Monday closes and records (Nasdaq, Nvidia, TSM intraday high $487.47), the 10-year, ISM, Foxconn’s figures, the OpenAI terms, the Qualcomm–Huawei terms, the Korean closes, the Constellation and AWS items, Piper/Truist/Morgan Stanley figures, the Apple event report, every TSMC calendar time (US daylight saving ends 1 Nov) and the 06:00 ET / 3h 30m time math. Applied fixes: Marvell’s post-earnings fall is now 10.3% on 28 August (11.6% was a two-day move); Japan’s 10-year first crossed 3% in September, not today; Brent is now Yahoo’s ~$98 (Tickmill’s $100.90 was stale); TrendForce’s net-payer report added to Qualcomm; the OpenAI round is noted as first reported 30 September. Not independently checked: custom silicon at ~$1.5bn/yr, the $2.71bn Marvell consensus, QTL at $1.28bn, Foxconn’s 12 November date, the trade balance time and Samsung’s Thursday date.
