Musk confirms Terafab is talking to TSMC. Intel, the only named foundry partner, is down 4% pre-market, and TSMC closed up 3% in Taipei.

CoreValue Coverage Brief - daily newsletter

The one thing

A quiet weekend with one story that matters. On Friday Tim Culpan’s Culpium newsletter reported that TSMC is discussing a collaboration with Terafab, the chip venture SpaceX and Tesla are building in Grimes County, Texas. The structure Culpan considers most likely has TSMC owning and operating the fab, with SpaceX/Terafab investing, committing to buy a guaranteed volume, or both. On Saturday Musk confirmed it on X: “Just discussions, but something may come of it.” TSMC has not commented. Intel joined Terafab in April, with its 14A process as the only named technology; Intel has not commented. Intel was −4.2% at $114.33 pre-market (Investing.com, 06:14 ET). Susquehanna estimates Intel lost a further 3.9 points of CPU model share in the third quarter, to 68.1%, while AMD gained 3.1 points to 29.3%. In Taipei, 2330.TW closed +3.00% at NT$2,575 and the TAIEX +2.55% at 49,712.

For our coverage, this is a TSMC capex and Intel foundry story more than a Tesla story. It is the third report in a week of new TSMC sites outside Taiwan (a Texas campus, Singapore, now Terafab), ten days before the 15 October call, with 2026 capex guided at $60–64bn.

Macro. Friday’s weak payrolls (29,000) lifted stocks: S&P 500 +0.73% to 7,722.72, Nasdaq +1.19% to 27,190.86 after an intraday record, SOX +2.40%. Nvidia touched an intraday record and closed at $233.95 (+1.34%), just below its 14 May closing high of $235.74. This morning futures are slightly lower (Reuters, 06:20 ET: S&P e-mini −0.18%, Nasdaq-100 −0.25%). The 10-year is at 5.28%. Traders see an 80% chance the Fed holds this month, and a December hike is still largely priced in (Reuters). Brent is near $100. The Nikkei rose +2.40%. ISM services is out at 10:00 ET.

Sector pulse: covered names with material news

Five of fifty names had material news, and four of them are the same story. Semis: TSMC and Intel (Terafab), Broadcom (detail on the $60bn Anthropic financing). Space & mobility: Tesla and SpaceX (Terafab backers; SpaceX’s Google compute contract reaches full rate this month). Everything else moved with the market and nothing else.

TSMC in talks to build and run a fab for Musk’s Terafab; Intel’s 14A role in doubt

TSM · INTC · TSLA · SPCX · Culpium late Fri 2 Oct; Musk on X Sat 3 Oct; Intel pre-market Mon 06:14 ET

Culpium reported on 2 October that TSMC and Terafab are discussing a collaboration in which TSMC would most likely own and operate a new facility serving Tesla, SpaceX and xAI exclusively. Other structures are possible, including Terafab keeping majority ownership with TSMC supplying the technology. Culpan links TSMC’s rumoured Texas campus to this effort. Terafab’s first phase is reported at about $16.8bn, and the full project at up to ~$119bn over several phases. Musk confirmed the talks on 3 October; TSMC has not commented. Intel joined in April with 14A as the only named process. TrendForce’s earnings preview, citing Taiwan press, has TSMC’s A14 pilot production in 1Q27 at Baoshan, the same quarter Intel targets for 14A risk production. Taiwan press also reports TSMC price increases from January 2027: 5–10% on advanced nodes and 10–15% on advanced packaging. Intel −4.2% pre-market at $114.33, after closing Friday at $119.33 (−0.56%). The TSM ADR closed Friday at $472.78 (+2.96%) and was about +1% pre-market.

The read: For our Intel study, the foundry case depended on landing marquee external customers, and Terafab was the most visible. If TSMC takes the operating role, 14A loses that reference customer before it reaches risk production. For our TSMC study, the question for 15 October is whether Arizona ($265bn plan), a possible Texas hub and Terafab still fit inside $60–64bn of capex, or whether customer money (Terafab equity or prepayments) pays for the extra fabs. That second option would be new for TSMC, and it would show up as customer deposits or minority interests rather than in capex. These are talks, not a deal; leave the models alone.

Broadcom recovers 3.4% as the $60bn Anthropic package takes shape: Blackstone leads an $18bn junior tranche

AVGO · GOOGL · Bloomberg, via Quartz/Yahoo, Fri 2 Oct 07:30 ET

Friday’s brief had the $60bn total and the $42bn Class A senior-secured tranche. Later reports added the rest: an $18bn Class B junior tranche led by Blackstone, which is putting up $9bn of its own capital and plans to syndicate the remainder. The package finances chips for Anthropic and other customers. Anthropic is expected to become Broadcom’s largest compute customer in 2027. Broadcom has still made no statement, and Anthropic’s S-1 is still not public on EDGAR (checked this morning). AVGO closed +3.35% at $355.14, recovering Thursday’s −2.15%.

The read: Read together, the tranches show who carries the risk. Banks take the senior $42bn and a private-credit fund the junior $18bn. Broadcom keeps the conversion right into Anthropic equity, and earlier reports had it guaranteeing part of the senior debt, so how much risk it keeps is unclear. On the face of it, outside lenders now carry much of the financing, which may be why the stock recovered. For our Broadcom study, the open question is unchanged: once the notes are syndicated, does Broadcom still hold any of them or guarantee them? We cannot size this until the public S-1 is filed.

The rest of semis rallied on the payrolls miss, with no company news. Arm +5.18% to $307.49, Texas Instruments +4.44% to $293.80 (aggregators find no company catalyst), KLA +3.27%, ASML +3.25%, AMD +2.95%, Lam +2.17%, Applied +2.03%, Marvell +1.57% ahead of tomorrow’s investor day. Micron fell −2.05% to $1,074.89, giving back Thursday’s gain; Synopsys was flat after its 12.8% rise. Korea was closed today for the substitute National Foundation Day holiday; Samsung’s third-quarter preliminary results are due Thursday 8 October.

Cloud & AI infrastructure

Quiet. Oracle +3.06% to $142.30, Vertiv +2.46%, Alphabet +1.56%, Amazon +1.33%, Microsoft +0.92%, CoreWeave +1.19%; we found no company news behind any of them. Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days run 6–7 October. No new hyperscaler bond deal.

SaaS & enterprise software

Friday gave back Thursday’s bounce: ServiceNow −2.45%, Adobe −1.49%, HubSpot −1.34%, SAP −1.05%. MongoDB +1.77% and Palo Alto +1.76% rose. No company news.

Space & mobility

SpaceX rises 7.4% after three launches in 13 hours; Google’s $920m-a-month compute contract reaches full rate this month

SPCX · TSLA · GOOGL · Session Fri 2 Oct

SpaceX closed +7.35% at $158.96 after Crew-13, the 18th Transporter rideshare (130 payloads) and NROL-97 on Falcon Heavy, all within 13 hours. The fundamental point is the AI segment. Under the contract disclosed in SpaceX’s amended registration statement (signed 5 June), Google pays $920m a month from October 2026 to June 2029 for capacity built on ~110,000 Nvidia GPUs. Payments were reduced during the ramp to September. Google could terminate if the GPUs were not available by 30 September, after a one-month grace period. After 31 December, either party can end the contract on 90 days’ notice. Tesla closed +4.65% at $370.59 after Friday’s Q3 deliveries beat. Next SpaceX lock-up tranche: Friday 9 October.

The read: For our SpaceX study, the 90-day termination right after 31 December matters more than the $29bn headline. The contract is only fixed for one quarter at full rate, so treat it as rental revenue that can be cancelled, not backlog. With Terafab, Musk’s companies are both selling GPU capacity to Google (and reportedly Anthropic) and building their own chip supply. Q3 results will show whether the full monthly rate actually started, which tests whether the 30 September GPU deadline was met.

Ads, consumer, hardware

Quiet. Dell +3.84% to $562.52 and Cisco +3.16% to $112.20 rose with the market, with no news found. Netflix −1.16% to $67.06 (Q3 on 20 October). Trade Desk −1.24% to $11.95.

Story worth owning

The anchor-customer fab: who pays when a customer wants its own TSMC fab

Until now TSMC has paid for its own fabs and sold the wafers. Customers prepaid sometimes, but they never co-owned the fab. Terafab would be different: one customer group with a fab of its own (Tesla, SpaceX and xAI), a reported ~$16.8bn first phase, and TSMC as the probable owner-operator. In the same week, Broadcom’s chips for Anthropic are being financed in tranches by banks and Blackstone, and SpaceX turned out to be a GPU landlord to Google at $920m a month. The common thread is that the buyers of AI capacity are increasingly funding the supply chain themselves, and the funding shows up on balance sheets where capex guidance does not capture it.

The testable claim: TSMC’s US expansion beyond Arizona will be paid for partly with customer capital, and the 2026–27 capex guide will understate the real build. Our TSMC study has the capex history and the Arizona $265bn plan. Our Intel study has the 14A customer case that Terafab was supposed to prove. Our Tesla and SpaceX studies give the funder side, through Q2 FCF of −$1.09bn at Tesla and SpaceX’s AI-segment cash flows. The 15 October call is the test: if TSMC describes Terafab as customer-funded, the angle is confirmed. We have not seen anyone put Terafab, the Broadcom tranches and the SpaceX/Google lease side by side as one financing pattern.

Figures are as reported by the sources listed and have not been independently verified against filings. Terafab terms come from a newsletter report and a post on X; nothing has been filed or announced by TSMC, Intel, Tesla or SpaceX. Everything attributed to Anthropic’s prospectus comes from press reports of a leaked draft; no S-1 is on EDGAR. Capex definitions are not comparable across companies.

Scheduled for 5 October 2026, 06:00 ET; compiled ~08:30 ET · coverage universe read from coverage.json (50 names, updated 2026-09-01).

Fact-check. A separate agent re-checked ten claim groups against Culpium, Investing.com/Reuters, TSMC IR, TrendForce, Seoul Economic Daily, Marvell IR, SEC EDGAR and Yahoo chart data. Confirmed: Musk’s quote and the Terafab structure and size, Susquehanna’s share figures, the Asia closes, the Broadcom tranches, the Friday index closes and macro figures, SpaceX’s move and Google contract terms, every calendar date and time, the US open at 09:30 ET, and that no Anthropic S-1 is on EDGAR. Applied fixes: Nasdaq and Nvidia set intraday records, not closing records; Singapore is no longer described as a US site; a quote saying Culpium called the Intel collaboration “not making progress” was removed (we could not source it); Intel pre-market is now Investing.com’s −4.2% / $114.33; the Broadcom read is softened because of the reported guarantee; the Korean closure is now correctly a holiday; and the FOMC minutes are dated 7 October.
