The one thing
Micron cleared the bar, and the debate has moved from prices to supply. Fiscal Q4 revenue was $54.23bn, up 379% from a year earlier, against a $50.0bn guide and LSEG consensus of $51.07bn. Non-GAAP gross margin was 87.0% and non-GAAP EPS $33.42. The fiscal Q1 guide is $61.5bn ±$1.5bn, about 86.25% gross margin and $38.15 EPS, against LSEG consensus of $57bn and $35.40. The second line we said to watch came in heavy. Micron guided fiscal Q1 net capex to about $11.5bn and the first half to about $25bn, and said the second half will be higher. That puts fiscal 2027 above $50bn, compared with $27.37bn in fiscal 2026. Most of the increase is cleanroom construction for capacity arriving in late calendar 2028. The shares closed flat at $1,065.11 and were about −0.6% in pre-market trading (Yahoo, ~07:00 BRT).
Asia read the print as good news for memory. SK hynix rose +3.21% and Samsung +2.79%, and the KOSPI gained +1.95% to 6,971.35. Korea’s September exports were a record $120.9bn (+83.5%), with chips at $60.3bn (+263%), the first month above $60bn. The Nikkei rose +3.30% and TSMC +1.21% to NT$2,510.
Macro backdrop. August PCE inflation was 3.4% year on year against 3.7% expected, and core was 3.0%, also below forecast. Wall Street still finished mixed: the S&P 500 fell 0.25%, the Nasdaq rose 0.24% and the Dow fell 0.86%. The 10-year is near 5.29%. Nasdaq futures were up about 0.55% at 07:00 BRT. ISM manufacturing is due at 11:00 BRT.
Sector pulse: covered names with material news
Six of fifty names had material news. Semis: Micron (results), Synopsys (investor day) and TSMC (Reuters on Texas). Cloud: CoreWeave (Fully Connected launches). Ads: Meta (OpenAI’s Dots launch) and Zeta (William Blair conviction list). Walmart fell a second day on a 25 September pricing letter, which is not new news. Software rallied 2–4% without company news. Dell appears only as a correction to our earlier briefs.

Micron: $54.2bn quarter, $61.5bn guide, more than 75% of 2027 output already committed, and a capex step-up
For fiscal Q4, ended 3 September, revenue was $54.23bn (+379%), GAAP EPS $32.87, non-GAAP EPS $33.42, non-GAAP gross margin 87.0% and operating cash flow $43.97bn. Fiscal 2026 revenue was $133.19bn, net capex $27.37bn and adjusted free cash flow $62.31bn. By business unit, Core Data Center was $18.00bn, Cloud Memory $16.28bn, Mobile and Client $13.11bn and Automotive/Embedded $6.82bn. CNBC reports DRAM revenue of $39.8bn, 73% of sales. On the call, management said DRAM prices rose by a high-teens percentage in the quarter and NAND prices by about 30%. More than 75% of 2027 output is already committed. Micron has signed 26 strategic customer agreements covering more than 35% of revenue through 2030, and customers’ financial commitments have risen to $32bn, “the vast majority” in cash deposits. Industry bit growth for 2027–28 is put at the low 20s% for DRAM and the mid-20s% for NAND, and both markets are expected to stay supply-constrained. The fiscal Q1 guide is $61.5bn ±$1.5bn, ~86.25% gross margin and $38.15 ±$1.00 EPS. Net capex should be ~$11.5bn in fiscal Q1 and ~$25bn in the first half, with the second half higher and construction growing faster than equipment.
The read: Yesterday we said a big capex increase would mean the supply response had started. It has, but it arrives late. Most of the new money is cleanroom construction for late calendar 2028, and management sees the market tighter in fiscal 2027–28 than in 2026. For our Micron study and the Memory Monitor, the cycle peak moves out rather than in. The guided margin edging down (87.0% to ~86.25%) is a mix effect, not a price signal; the NAND and DRAM price rises say pricing is still climbing. The number to add to the model is the $32bn of deposits. Customers are now funding part of the fab build (see “Story worth owning”). Note that fiscal 2027 capex is not a company figure. “Above $50bn” is our arithmetic from the first-half guide.
Synopsys targets ~15% annual growth and a ~50% margin by fiscal 2030, guides fiscal 2027 to $11.15bn, and signs an OpenAI chip-design model deal
The fiscal 2026–30 model calls for about 15% compound revenue growth: 13%+ in EDA, 10%+ in simulation and analysis, and 17%+ in design IP. It targets a non-GAAP operating margin of about 50% by fiscal 2030, mid-20s% growth in non-GAAP EPS and free cash flow, and up to 50% of free cash flow returned through buybacks, starting with about $1bn “over the coming months”. Fiscal 2027 guidance (year to October 2027) is revenue of $11.10–11.20bn (about +15%), a ~44.0% non-GAAP operating margin, $19.04–19.12 of non-GAAP EPS and about $3.1bn of free cash flow. Synopsys and OpenAI will build “GPT-Synopsys”, a model for chip design. MarketBeat reports $400m of annual Ansys revenue synergies by fiscal 2029, and cost synergies one year early, in fiscal 2027; those figures are not in the release we read. The stock closed +4.78% at $434.94 and was about +2.6% pre-market. Cadence rose +1.86% in sympathy.
The read: BNP’s “positive catalyst” call was right. For our Synopsys study, whose valuation workbook doubles as the master, the published framework replaces the long-range assumptions: 15% growth and a 50% margin by fiscal 2030, from 44% in fiscal 2027. The OpenAI deal deserves a paragraph. If a frontier lab builds a design model inside Synopsys’ tools, the tools stay the platform, which counters the idea that AI will hollow out EDA.
Reuters: TSMC weighs a Texas investment on top of $265bn in Arizona
Two unnamed sources told Reuters that TSMC is evaluating an investment in Texas. The plans “remain under consideration and have not been finalized”. TSMC’s committed Arizona total is $265bn across 12 fab, packaging and R&D facilities, including $100bn added in July. We found no company comment. In Taipei on Thursday, 2330.TW closed +1.21% at NT$2,510 and the TAIEX +0.86% at 48,353.49. The ADR closed Wednesday at $456.19 (−0.16%).
The read: This is a report, not a decision, so do not touch the model. For our TSMC study, a second US state would update the “Arizona $265bn” chapter, and our earlier note that the Japan and Europe copy is stale still applies. The question to ask on the 15 October call is whether US expansion is now set by customers’ geography or by tariff policy.
Intel rose +3.71% to $120.23; aggregators cite foundry and Arizona partnership hopes, but we found no company news. Lam +1.44%; ASML −1.24%, Arm −1.37%, Broadcom −1.10%. The SOX was flat. Nvidia (+0.51%) pays its $0.25 dividend today. No news from AMD, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Marvell (investor day 6 October), Applied Materials or KLA.
Cloud & AI infrastructure
CoreWeave puts Nvidia’s Vera Rubin NVL72 into production, with Cognition as first customer, and launches Forge and a partner network
CoreWeave will deploy Nvidia Vera Rubin NVL72 systems with the Vera CPU for production AI workloads, with Cognition as the first customer. Forge is a development layer that runs the whole loop of building and improving models and agents in one environment; MasterClass and Canva are early users. The CoreWeave Partner Network lists validated integrations, including CrowdStrike, VAST Data, Reflection and ClickHouse. No financing, contract value or pricing was disclosed. The stock closed +1.38% at $87.12. The conference ends today.
The read: These are product launches, not balance-sheet news. For our CoreWeave study, the point is the attempt to move up the stack (Forge) so that customers stay when GPU-hour prices fall. Forge only matters if it brings revenue from customers other than the anchor labs, and CoreWeave has not given that figure.
Financing and regulation. On Wednesday the FTC confirmed an investigation into OpenAI, Anthropic and METR over AI-agent incidents, and plans to send civil investigative demands, which can compel executive testimony, in the coming weeks (Semafor; first reported by the New York Post). That follows OpenAI’s second training pause in three months (27 September). Axios reported on 29 September that OpenAI’s run-rate is nearly $70bn, up more than 70% since the start of Q3. Treat that as a run-rate and keep it apart from the >$40bn August figure. Amazon +1.01%, Alphabet +0.93% and Microsoft +0.77% have exposure through their stakes and cloud contracts, but nothing changes in the numbers yet. There was no new hyperscaler bond deal. Vertiv fell −2.83% and GE Vernova −1.25%, with no company news. No news from Oracle or Cloudflare.
SaaS & enterprise software
Software rebounded without company news: HubSpot +3.70%, MongoDB +3.39%, ServiceNow +3.13%, Adobe +2.90%, Snowflake +2.80%, Palo Alto +2.29%. That recovers part of the losses after Meta’s enterprise launch. Snowflake’s $3.75bn of converts close today. SAP fell −1.12%. No news from Salesforce, Datadog, Workday or CrowdStrike, apart from CrowdStrike joining CoreWeave’s partner network.
Ads & adtech
OpenAI launches “Dots”, an always-on agent aimed at Meta’s Muse; Meta falls 1.8%
Each Dot runs on GPT-6 Astra with its own cloud computer and browser and connects to more than 4,000 apps. Users reach it through ChatGPT, Slack and Teams. It is rolling out to Pro and Business Premium users, with Enterprise in beta, and the first Dot is included. Meta closed −1.84% at $725.18. Its September gain is reported at about 28–29%, mostly on Muse, which launched on 8 September. Coverage also points to Meta denying reports that Muse read private messages without permission.
The read: The two agents reach users differently. Muse is free and sits inside Meta’s apps, so Meta monetises it through ads and commerce. Dots is sold inside paid ChatGPT subscriptions. For our Digital Ads study, the risk is not losing users but losing the agent’s attention to an assistant Meta does not own. Watch the privacy story: one regulatory finding on Muse would cost more than a rival launch.
Zeta rose +9.01% to $31.57; GuruFocus reports that it was added to William Blair’s Analyst Conviction List, replacing Twilio. That is an analyst action, not company news. No news from Netflix (reports 20 October), Trade Desk or Roku.
Consumer platforms & commerce
Quiet. Walmart fell −2.70% to $103.92, a second day of losses with no new company news. Coverage ties the slide to chief executive John Furner’s letter, dated 25 September. The letter rules out using AI to charge individual shoppers different prices based on income, purchase history or urgency, and sets a fixed pricing limit for its Sparky assistant. We have not read the letter itself. For our Walmart study, the pledge gives up a margin lever that Amazon-style dynamic pricing keeps, and the market priced it as such. Airbnb +2.35%, Uber −1.23%; no news from Booking or Shopify.
Hardware, space & mobility
Correction on Dell. Our last two briefs said Dell had filed nothing about the $1.75bn of 4.900% notes due today. In fact, an 8-K dated 15 September records a $5bn senior-note issue: $1.25bn of 5.100% notes due 2029, $1.25bn of 5.400% due 2031, $1.5bn of 5.600% due 2033 and $1bn of 5.900% due 2037. The 8-K does not state the use of proceeds, so we cannot confirm the issue refinances today’s maturity, but liquidity is not the issue. Apple +1.10%, Cisco +0.65%. Tesla reports Q3 deliveries tomorrow against company-compiled consensus of 461,974; the stock rose +0.56%. SpaceX rose +1.09%; its next lock-up tranche is 9 October.

- Micron after hours. CNBC (16:59 ET update) said the stock “rose slightly”. Investing.com’s transcript note has it down 0.78% at $1,056.75, and SSBCrack and Yahoo describe it as fading on capex. Yahoo pre-market at about 07:00 BRT shows ~$1,058.90 (−0.6%). A pre-market figure of $1,078–1,080 seen on one aggregator could not be matched to a time and is not used.
- Micron consensus. For fiscal Q4, LSEG had $51.07bn and $31.61 (CNBC); Yahoo and SSBCrack cite $31.83 EPS. For the fiscal Q1 guide, LSEG had $57bn and $35.40, while other outlets cite $56.8bn and $36.02.

Story worth owning
The customers are paying for the fabs: Micron’s $32bn of customer commitments
Last night Micron disclosed 26 strategic customer agreements covering more than 35% of its revenue through 2030, with customers’ financial commitments at $32bn, “the vast majority of which are cash deposits”. That is more than its entire fiscal 2026 net capex of $27.37bn. Micron is now raising fiscal 2027 capex to above $50bn on our arithmetic (an analyst put that figure to management on the call, and management did not dispute it), mostly for cleanrooms that open in late 2028. In effect, the buyers of the memory are paying in advance for the capacity that will make it.
Coverage of AI-capex financing has focused on hyperscaler bonds, neocloud converts and private credit. Supplier prepayments are a fourth channel that rarely appears in that discussion, and they do not appear in anyone’s capex guidance. A prepayment sits on the buyer’s balance sheet as a deposit or other asset, not as capex. The testable claim: the hyperscalers’ reported capex understates the cash they have committed to the build-out, because part of it is parked as deposits with memory makers (and likely with foundries and power suppliers). Our Micron study gives the supplier side. The Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Meta studies can be searched for growth in prepaid and other non-current assets. Micron does not name its depositors, so the honest version publishes a range, not a guess. SK hynix and Samsung disclosures on long-term agreements would complete the map.

Standing-table figures not updated today are carried from the 30 September brief and the releases cited there.
Figures are as reported by the sources listed and have not been independently verified against filings, except where a company release or SEC filing is cited directly (Micron, Synopsys, Dell 8-K, CoreWeave). Call commentary (Micron’s capex path, commitments, pricing) is taken from a third-party transcript. Micron’s fiscal 2027 capex of >$50bn is our arithmetic, not company guidance. Consensus estimates and analyst actions are flagged as such. Capex definitions are not comparable across companies.

Fact-check. A separate agent checked seven claim groups against primary sources: the Micron 8-K and call transcript (Benzinga), the Synopsys release, Korea Times, AP index closes, the Reuters TSMC report, the CoreWeave releases, Dell’s 8-K, and every BRT conversion. All headline figures were confirmed. Applied fixes: Walmart’s pricing letter is dated 25 September, and the −2.64% was Tuesday’s move, so Walmart is no longer counted as news. The FTC has not yet sent its demands. Synopsys’ segment targets are restated, and a mislinked 8-K was removed. “Prepaid” became “committed, mostly as cash deposits”. Micron’s >$50bn is labelled as our arithmetic. Dots’ Enterprise tier is in beta. Unverified: individual price moves beyond the Yahoo feed, the Axios ~$70bn run-rate, Meta’s privacy denial and Zeta’s list addition (secondary source only).
