The one thing
The chip supplier is now the lender. Reuters, citing Anthropic’s IPO prospectus, reports that Broadcom has agreed to lend Anthropic up to $42bn in convertible notes. The money finances about a third of a $125.2bn five-year commitment for TPU computing capacity. Broadcom may bring in a financing partner, no notes are expected to be sold before the IPO, and the notes can convert into Anthropic equity. Anthropic also placed funds in a restricted account for Broadcom’s benefit in April and may have to deposit more. The prospectus itself flags “potential conflicts of interest” from Broadcom being both supplier and lender. Broadcom fell −2.15% to $343.64. Note on sourcing: we searched EDGAR this morning and found no public S-1 or DRS for Anthropic PBC. The document in circulation is the draft that leaked on 28–29 September (TechCrunch, Fortune). Anthropic filed confidentially (a DRS) on 1 June. Treat every figure from it as reported, not filed. This morning (08:07, per AskTraders citing Bloomberg) Broadcom’s banks are reported to be assembling a ~$60bn chip-financing package for Anthropic and others, with the $42bn as a Class A senior-secured tranche. Broadcom was +1.8% pre-market.
The same day, lenders pushed back on chip-backed credit. A separate Reuters piece (1 Oct, 06:02 UTC) says banks and credit funds want stronger guarantees on Nvidia’s $500bn chip-backed financing plan, announced in August with financiers including Blackstone, Apollo and KKR. Nvidia originally capped residual-value support at around 25%. The question is the same as Broadcom’s: how long does a GPU or TPU earn enough to service the debt secured on it? Separately, Bloomberg reports Anthropic is aiming to list as early as mid-November, with marketing from the week of 9 November, at a target of up to $2tn.
Macro. September payrolls rose only 29,000 against 90,000–95,000 expected (Yahoo; Morningstar), and unemployment rose to 4.2%. Futures rose on the miss: Nasdaq-100 +1.15%, S&P +0.84%. The 10-year fell to ~5.17% after touching 5.34% on Thursday, its highest since 2002, and WTI fell about 3.9% to ~$89. Thursday closed flat to slightly up: S&P +0.19%, Nasdaq +0.04%, SOX +1.59%. ISM manufacturing was 54.5, with prices paid up 6.8 points to 77.9.

Broadcom to lend Anthropic up to $42bn in convertible notes to finance a $125.2bn TPU lease
Reuters reviewed Anthropic’s IPO prospectus and reports that Broadcom will provide up to $42bn of convertible notes. That covers about one-third of the $125.2bn Anthropic has committed over five years for TPU computing capacity. Broadcom can bring in a financing partner, and no notes are expected to be sold before the IPO. Anthropic placed funds in a restricted account for Broadcom’s benefit in April 2026, and further deposits depend on performance conditions. The risk factors warn that Broadcom’s pricing and hardware decisions could limit Anthropic’s access to compute, and that a default could make payments due immediately and cut off access to the facility. The same reports cite Anthropic’s 2025 revenue at ~$4.6bn, an operating loss above $8bn, a $15bn revolving credit facility and $518bn of infrastructure obligations. Coverage repeats Broadcom’s AI-semiconductor revenue outlook of ~$115bn in fiscal 2027 and ~$230bn in fiscal 2028; we have not traced those figures to a Broadcom document. Bloomberg reported this morning that Broadcom’s banks are assembling about $60bn of chip financing for Anthropic and others, with the $42bn as a Class A senior-secured tranche, and are preparing syndication letters. Broadcom has made no statement. The stock closed −2.15% at $343.64.
The read: Our Anthropic and Frontier Labs studies treat compute deals as purchase commitments. This is different: the supplier now funds part of the purchase and can end up holding Anthropic equity, so Broadcom’s AI revenue partly depends on its own credit. For our Broadcom study, the AI revenue line needs a note on how much of it is vendor-financed. The market took the deal as a cost to Broadcom, not a win. Two cautions. Do not add the $42bn to the $518bn, because the loan funds part of the commitment and is not new compute. And the “$35bn, 80%+ backstopped” Broadcom/Anthropic structure in Reuters’ Nvidia piece the same morning does not match. Bloomberg’s $60bn package may explain the difference; see “Where sources disagree”.
Synopsys rises 12.8% after its investor day, with a $1bn+ AWS licence on top of the OpenAI deal
Yesterday’s brief covered the long-term model (~15% compound growth, ~50% margin by fiscal 2030) and the fiscal 2027 guide of $11.10–11.20bn. The deal that moved the stock is a multi-year agreement with AWS, announced alongside the investor day (Synopsys IR) and reported at more than $1bn. Amazon licenses Synopsys’ silicon IP and design software for its Nitro, Graviton and Trainium chips, on a licence-plus-royalty basis, so part of the revenue rises with Amazon’s chip volumes. The stock closed +12.78% at $490.54 and Cadence +6.22% at $350.73. HSBC’s upgrade to Buy with a $700 target, which some coverage links to the move, dates from 25 September.
The read: The royalty structure matters more than the size of the AWS deal. Synopsys now earns more when hyperscalers make more custom chips, so it gains from the move to in-house silicon (Trainium, TPU) whoever wins it. Our Synopsys study already has the framework from yesterday. Add one line: AWS and OpenAI give the EDA vendors a stake in custom silicon, not just tool sales. Cadence’s 6% rise in sympathy, with no news of its own, is the market applying that read to both companies.
Lenders want more guarantees on Nvidia’s $500bn chip-backed financing plan
Banks and asset managers question whether GPUs can serve as long-term collateral. They want more support than the ~25% residual-value cap Nvidia first proposed, such as Nvidia guarantees or long-term contracts from investment-grade customers. Banks typically depreciate the chips over 3–4 years. S&P Global’s valuation work allows useful lives of up to 9–10 years but takes a “conservative view” of collateral value. Reuters cites CoreWeave’s $8.5bn facility (rated A3, backed by Meta contracts) as the model lenders prefer, and says deals worth tens of billions now in the pipeline will likely carry stronger guarantees. Nvidia closed +1.09% at $230.86.
The read: This links two of our existing angles: GPU useful life (the depreciation debate) and AI-capex financing. If lenders insist on investment-grade offtake, the neoclouds and labs without it pay more or rely on the chipmaker’s balance sheet. Either way, more of the risk moves back to Nvidia and Broadcom. That is a tripwire to track on the AI-bubble radar.
Taiwan responds to rumours of a TSMC plant in Singapore; TSMC declines to comment
Responding to rumours that TSMC is weighing a semiconductor investment in Singapore, Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs said it respects companies’ diversified global footprints, that key technology stays in Taiwan, and that the government will help TSMC expand at home (DigiTimes, China Times). TSMC said it does not comment on market rumours. That follows Wednesday’s Reuters report on a possible Texas campus (Bloomberg describes it as tens of billions of dollars across several fabs). 2330.TW closed −0.40% at NT$2,500 and the TAIEX +0.25%. The ADR rose +0.66% to $459.20 on Thursday.
The read: These are still rumours, so leave the model alone. Two reports on overseas sites in three days, and a government response, make the 15 October call more important. The question is whether TSMC’s 2026 capex range of $60–64bn still holds if Arizona, Texas and possibly Singapore all go ahead, and who pays for them.
Equipment followed Micron. Lam +3.53%, Applied +3.50%, KLA +2.77%, Micron itself +3.03% to $1,097.39 after Wednesday’s results. We found no company news: Micron’s fiscal 2027 capex path above $50bn means tool orders. (One aggregator attributed the move to a SanDisk investor day, but that event was on 13 August.) Qualcomm −1.06%. No news from AMD, Intel, Texas Instruments, Marvell (investor day Tuesday), ASML or Arm. In Asia today SK hynix rose +0.44% and Samsung was flat after completing its buyback; foreign investors were net sellers.

Alphabet falls 1.7% after launching Gemini 4 Argon to a restricted group, and faces a $3.2bn ad-tech damages claim
Gemini 4 Argon, a model for coding and cybersecurity, is available at first only to vetted cybersecurity organisations and Google’s internal teams, for safety reasons. Separately, Judge P. Kevin Castel of the federal court in Manhattan (S.D.N.Y.) has sent a publisher ad-tech damages claim of about $3.2bn to a jury trial: about $1.7bn for a class of roughly 5,000 publishers, ~$900m for USA Today and ~$600m for the Daily Mail. Damages could be trebled (Claims Journal). GOOGL closed −1.70% at $338.24.
The read: The Broadcom loan matters more to Alphabet than Argon does. Broadcom and Google build the TPUs together, and Anthropic’s $125.2bn TPU commitment is the largest outside customer for that chip. For our Google study, the TPU is turning into a business partly paid for by its co-designer’s balance sheet. The prospectus excerpts do not make clear how much of the $125.2bn reaches Google Cloud rather than Broadcom; that is the question to settle before writing it up.
CoreWeave says it can raise prices another 10%; analysts split after Fully Connected
Investing.com reports that chief executive Michael Intrator sold $26.7m of stock. The trades were on 22 September, reported on a Form 4, and are not new selling. After the conference, Mizuho kept a Neutral rating with a $115 target. Rosenblatt kept Buy with a $250 target and notes a further 10% price increase on top of an earlier 25%, which Mizuho says CoreWeave itself disclosed at the conference. Nebius raised selected on-demand Nvidia GPU-hour rates by 16.9–21.0% from 1 October; on-demand H100 went from $3.85 to $4.50. The stock closed +1.66% at $88.57.
The read: GPU-hour prices are still rising, which supports the neocloud debt that Reuters says lenders now prefer contract-backed. For our CoreWeave study, a second 10% increase, disclosed by the company at the conference, matters more to revenue per GPU than Forge does. Confirm it on the Q3 call before putting it in the model.
GE Vernova rose +3.89% to $987.45 after Evercore ISI repeated Outperform with a $1,350 target, and Vertiv rose +1.99%. Both are analyst-driven. No company news from Amazon (apart from the Synopsys licence), Microsoft, Oracle or Cloudflare. No new hyperscaler bond deal.
SaaS & enterprise software
The rebound continued without company news: HubSpot +6.08% (24/7 Wall St. calls it a sector bounce, with Atlassian +6%), Salesforce +3.10%, ServiceNow +2.80%. Workday fell −1.95%, two days after its restructuring.
Space & mobility
Tesla delivers 486,532 in Q3, about 25,000 above consensus; storage misses at 13.7 GWh
Deliveries were 486,532 (Model 3/Y 478,237; other models 8,295), down 2.1% from the record 497,099 a year earlier but above the company-compiled consensus of 461,974. Production was 464,391, so Tesla delivered 22,141 more cars than it built and ran down inventory for a second quarter. Year-to-date deliveries are 1,324,681 (+8.8%). Storage deployments were 13.7 GWh (+9.6% y/y), against 15.9 GWh consensus. The stock was about +2.1% pre-market at $361.42 (Yahoo, ~10:25 BRT).
The read: The delivery beat partly comes from inventory, so it says less about demand than the headline suggests. For our Tesla study, the storage miss matters more. Energy is the segment the bull case relies on to offset car margins, and it grew only 9.6%. Q2 FCF was −$1.09bn; inventory drawdown should help Q3 cash, so look at FCF on the print, not deliveries.
Ads, consumer, hardware
Quiet. Netflix fell −2.49% to $67.85, still on worries about engagement; it reports 20 October. Booking −1.61%, Apple −0.81%, SpaceX −1.85%.

- “Filing” or leak? CNBC/Reuters headline the Broadcom loan as “filing says”, and one Yahoo rewrite calls it officially filed. EDGAR shows no S-1 or DRS for Anthropic PBC as of ~09:50 BRT today. Fortune and TechCrunch describe a leaked draft (28–29 Sep). We treat it as a leak.
- $42bn or $35bn? Reuters’ Nvidia-financing piece (1 Oct, 06:02 UTC) mentions a “$35bn” Broadcom/Anthropic structure “80%+ backstopped”. The prospectus-based reports later the same day give “up to $42bn”. Bloomberg (2 Oct) puts the $42bn as the Class A senior-secured tranche of a ~$60bn package, so the $35bn may be an earlier or different structure. Not reconciled.
- Alphabet share classes. One aggregator has GOOG up 1.01% while GOOGL fell 1.70%; a gap that wide between share classes is implausible, and we use the Yahoo GOOGL close only.
- Equipment rally cause. Yahoo attributes a Lam/Applied rally to SanDisk’s investor day, but that event was on 13 August. We found no company-specific catalyst for 1 October.
- Payrolls consensus. Yahoo has 90,000 expected and Morningstar 95,000.

Story worth owning
Who is really financing the TPU: Broadcom’s $42bn and the vendor-finance stack
In one morning, two reports described the same financing structure. Broadcom will lend up to $42bn to a customer that has committed $125.2bn to its chips. Lenders on Nvidia’s $500bn plan want the chipmaker to guarantee more of the residual value. Two days ago Micron disclosed $32bn of customer commitments, mostly cash deposits. The money is circling: suppliers lend to customers, and customers deposit with suppliers. Coverage of AI-capex financing still focuses on hyperscaler bonds and neocloud converts.
The testable claim: for the two largest AI-chip vendors, a growing share of AI revenue is financed by the vendor’s own balance sheet, through loans, guarantees or equity conversion, and current disclosures do not let a reader size it. Our Anthropic study supplies the customer side: $518bn of obligations, ~80% reported as non-cancellable. Our Broadcom and Nvidia studies give the vendor side, so the job is to search each 10-Q for notes receivable, guarantees and investments in customers. Our Frontier Labs rule applies: never add the compute-deal register to the loan, because the loan funds part of the same commitment. Wait for the public S-1 before publishing figures. The leaked draft is enough to frame the question, but not to quote as filed.

Fact-check. A separate agent checked ten claim groups against Reuters, Bloomberg, CNBC, company IR and SEC sources. Confirmed: Broadcom/Anthropic terms, Reuters on Nvidia’s financing plan, IPO timing, Synopsys’ move and AWS terms, payrolls, ISM, GE Vernova, Gemini 4 Argon, and the BRT time arithmetic. Applied fixes: Tesla deliveries were released and are now reported; the HSBC Synopsys upgrade is dated 25 September; the 14 October investor day is sourced to Bloomberg; the $3.2bn Alphabet claim is identified (S.D.N.Y., jury trial); the 10-year high is 5.34%; the MOEA statement is reframed and TSMC’s no-comment added; CoreWeave’s CEO sale is dated 22 September; and the further price increase was disclosed by CoreWeave itself. Bloomberg’s $60bn package was added. Still unverified: Broadcom’s ~$115bn/~$230bn AI revenue outlook (secondary source only).
